Chapter#5. Counselor, Camper and Zero.

 

There were six large gray tents, and each one had a black letter on it : A,B,C,D,E, or F. The first five tents were for the campers. The coundelors slept in F.
6개의 큰 회색 텐트가 있었고, 각각  A,B,C,D,E 또는 F라는 검은 글자가 있었다. 처음 5개의 텐트는 캠퍼들을 위한 것이고  상담사들은  F에서 잠을 잤다.

Stanley was assigned to D tent. Mr. Pendanski was his counselor.
스탠리는 D텐트로 배정받았다. Mr. Pendanski가 그의 상담사였다.

"My name is easy to remember," said Mr. Pendanski as he shook hands with Stanley just outside the tent. "Three easy word : pen, dance, key."

"제 이름은 기억하기 쉬워," 라고 텐트 바로 밖에서 스탠리와 악수를 하면서 펜단스키 씨가 말했다. "세가지 쉬운 단어.펜, 댄스, 키"

Mr.Sir returned to the office.

Mr.Sir는 사무실로 돌아갔다.

Mr. Pendenski was younger than Mr.Sir, and not nearly as scary looking. The top of his head was shaved so close it was almost bald, but his face was covered in a thick curly black beard. His nose was badly sunburned.
Mr. Pendenski는  Mr.Sir보다 어렸고, 그렇게 무섭게 보이지는 않았다. 그의 정수리는 너무 깎아 거의 대머리였지만, 얼굴은 두껍고 곱슬곱슬한 검은 수염으로 덮여 있었다. 그의 코는 심하게 햇볕에 탔다.

"Mr. Sir isn't really so bad," said Mr. Pendanski.  "He's just been in a bad mood ever since he quit smoking. The person you've got to worry about is the Warden. There's really only one rule at Campe Green Lake: Don't upset the Warden."

"Mr. Sir는 그렇게 나쁘지는 않아," 라고 펜단스키씨가 말했다. "그가 담배를 끊은 이후로 계속 기분이 좋지 않을뿐이야. 너희가 걱정하셔야 할 사람은 바로 '소장님'이야.' Camp Green Lake:에는 오직 단 한 가지 규칙이 있어. 소장을 화나게 하지 말 것."

 

Stanley nodded, as if he understood.

스탠리는 이해했다는 뜻으로 고개를 끄덕였다.

 

"I want you to know, Stanley, that I respect you, " Mr. Pendansky said. " I understand you've made some bad mistake in you life. Otherwise you wouldn't be here. But everyone makes mistake. You may have done some bad things. but that doesn't mean you're a bad kid."

"스탠리, 제가 당신을 존경한다는 것을 알아주셨으면  해"라고 펜단스키 씨가 말했다. "너가  너의 인생에서 나쁜 실수를 했다는 것을 이해해. 안그랬으면 너는 여기에 없었을 거야. 하지만 모두가 실수를 해. 너가 나쁜 짓을 했을 수도 있지만 그렇다고 나쁜 아이라는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니야."

 

Stanley nodded. It seemed pointless to try and tell his counselor that he was innocent. He figured that everyone probably said that. He didn't want Mr. Pen-dance-key to think he had a bad attitude.

스탠리는 고개를 끄덕였다. 상담사에게 자신이 결백하다고 말하는 것은 무의미한 것 같았다. 그는 모든 사람들이 아마도 그런 말을 했을 거라고 생각했다. 판단스키가 자신이 나쁜 태도를 가지고 있다고 생각하는 것을 원하지 않았다.

 

"I'm going to help you turn your life around," said his counselor. "But you're going to have to help too. Can I count on your help?" 

"내가 너의 인생을 바꾸는 것을 도와줄거야," 라고 그의 상담사가 말했다. "하지만 너도 도와줘야 해. 너의 도와줄것을 믿어도 될까?"

"Yes. sir," Stanley said.

 

Mr. Pendanski said, " Good," and patted Stanley on the back.

Mr. Pendanski는 "좋아," 라고 말하고 스탠리의 등을 토닥였다.

 

Two boys, each carrying a shovel, were coming across the compound. Mr Pandanski called to them. "Rex! Alan! I want you to come say hello to Stanley. He's the newest member of our team."

각각 삽을 들고 있는 두 소년이 텐트를 가로질러 오고 있었다. 판단스키 씨가 그들을 불렀다. "렉스! 알렌! 스탠리에게 인사하러 와줄래. 스탠리는 우리 팀에 새로운 일원이야."

 

The boys glanced wearily at Stanley.

그 소년들은 지친 눈빛으로 스탠리를 흘끔 쳐다보았다.

 

They were dripping with sweat, and their faces were so dirty that it took Stanley a moment to notice that one kid was white and the other black.

그들은 땀이 뚝뚝 흘리고 있었고, 그들의 얼굴은 너무 더러워서 스탠리는 누가 백인이고 누가 흑인이라는 것을 알아차리기까지 한참 걸렸다.

 

" What happened to Barf Bag?" asked the black kid.

"구토 봉지에게 무슨 일이 일어났습니까?"라고 흑인 아이가 물었다.

 

"Lewis is still in the hospital," said Mr. Pandanski. "He won't be returning." He told the boys to come shake Stanley's hand and introduce themsleves, "like gentleman." 

"루이스는 아직 병원에 있어," 라고 판단스키 씨가 말했다. "루이스는 돌아오지 않을 거야" 그는 소년들에게 스탠리의 손을 잡고 "신사처럼" 자신들을 소개하라고 말했다.

 

"Hi," the white kid grunted.

"안녕," 백인 아이가 툴툴거렸다.

 

"That's Alan," said Mr. Pandanski.

"애는 알렌," 판단스키씨가 말했다.

 

"My name's not Alan," the boy said. " It's Squid. And that's X-Ray."

"내이름은 알렌이 아니야," 소년이 말했더. "나는 오징이이고, 애는 엑스레이야."

 

"Hey," said X-Ray. He smiled and shook Stanley's hand. He wore glasses, bjut they were so dirty that Stanley wondered how he could see out of them.

"안녕," 엑스레이가 말했더. 그는 웃으며 스탠리와 악수했다. 그는 안경을 쓰고있었지만 안경이 너무 더러워 과연 그것으로 볼수 있을지 궁금했다.

 

Mr. Pandaski told Alan to go to the Rec Hall and bring the other boys to meet Stanley. Then he led him inside the tent. 

팬더스키 씨는 앨런에게 휴게실에 가서 다른 소년들을 데리고 와 스탠리를 만나게 하라고 말했다. 그런 후 그는 그를 텐트 안으로 데려갔다.

 

There were seven cots, each one less than two feet from the one next to it.

그곳에는 7개의 간이침대가 있었고 각각 2피트(약 61cm) 도 안되게 떨어져 있었다.

 

"Which was Lewis's cot?" Mr. Pandanski asked.

"루이스의 침대가 어떤거지? 판데스키씨가 물었다.

 

"Barf bag slept here," said X-Ray, kicking at once of the beds.

"구토봉지는 여기에요." 엑스레이가 침대 하나를 차면서 말했다.

 

" All right, Stanley, that'll be yours," said Mr. Pandanski.

"좋아, 스탠리,  저것이 네 것이다"

 

Stanley looked ast the cot and nodded. He was't particularly thrilled about sleeping in the same cot that had been used by somebody named Barf Bag.

스탠리는 침대를 보고 끄덕였다. " 구토봉지라는 아이가 쓰던 침대에 자는 것에 대해 특별히 기쁘지가 않았다.

 

Seven crates were stacked in tow piles at one side of the tent. The open end of the crates faced outward. Stanley put his backpack, change of clothes, and towel in what used to be Barf Bag's crate. It was at the bottom of the stack that had three in it.''

일곱 개의 상자가 텐트의 한쪽에  두개의 더미로 쌓여 있었다. 열린 상자의 끝은 바깥쪽을 향했다. 스탠리는 배낭과 갈아입을옷, 그리고 수건을 구토봉지가 사용한 상자에다가 넣었다. 세 칸짜리의 줄 맨  아래에 상자가 였다.'

 

Squid returned with four other boys. The first three were introduced by Mr. Pandanski as Jose, Theodore, and Ricky. They called themselves Magnet, Armpit, and Zigzag.

오징어는 다른 네 명의 소년들과 함께 돌아왔다. 판단스키 씨가 호세, 시어도어, 리키 세아이를  소개했다. 그들은 자신들을 자석, 겨드랑이, 지그재그라고 불렀다.

 

"They all have nicknames," explained Mr. Pendanski. 

"그 애들은 모두 별명이 있어," 판단스키씨가 설명해줬다.

 

"However, I prefer to use the names their parents gave them- the names that society will recognize them by when they return to become useful and hardworking members of society."

"하지만, 나는  그애들 부모님이 지어주신 이름을 사용하는 것을 선호하지 - 그들이 필요하고 열심히 일하는 사회 구성원이 되기 위해 돌아갈때 사회가 그들을 인정할 이름말이야."

 

"It ain't just a nickname,"  X-Ray told Mr. Pandanski. He tapped the rim of his glasses. " I can see inside you, Mom. You've got a big fat heart."

 "이것은 단순한 별명이 아니에요"엑스레이가 판단스키씨에게 말했다. 그는 안경테를 가볍게 두드렸다. " 저는 당신의 속을 볼 수있어요. 엄마. 당신은 크고 뚱뚱한 심장을 가졌어요."

 

The last boy either didn't have a real name or else he didn't have a nickname. Both Mr. Pendaski and X-Ray called him Zero.

마지막 소년은 진짜 이름이 없거나 별명이 없었다. 펜다스키씨와 엑스레이는 그를 제로라고 불렀다.

 

"You know why his name's Zero?" asked Mr. Pendanski. "Because there's nothing inside his head." He smiled and playfully shook Zero's shoulder.

"이 애의 이름이 왜 제로인지 알아? 판단스키가 물었다. "왜냐하면 이 녀석 머리에는 아무것도 없거든" 그가 웃으며 제로의 어깨를 장난스럽게 흔들며 웃었다.

 

Zero said nothing. 제로는 아무말하지 않았다.

 

"And that's Mom!" a boy said.

"그리고 이분은 엄마야!" 한 소년이 말했다.

 

Mr. Pendaski smiled at him. "If it makes you feel better to call me Mom, Theodore, go ahead and call me Mom." He turned to Stanley. "If you have questions, Theodore will help you. You got that, Theodore. I'm depending on you."

Theodorens spit a thin line of saliva between his teeth, causing some of the other boys to complain about the need to keep their "home" sanitary.

펜다스키 씨는 그를 향해 미소를 지었다. "네가 나를 엄마라고 부르는 것이 더 좋다면, 테오도르, 나를 엄마라고 불러라." 그는 스탠리에게 돌아섰다. "만약 당신이 질문이 있다면, 테오도르가 당신을 도울거야. 그렇지, 테오도르. 널 믿을께."

"You were all new here once," said Mr. Pendanski, "and you all know what it feels like. I'm counting on every one of you to help Stanley."

펜단스키 씨는 "여러분들도 한때 여기가 처음이었잖아" 라고 말했다, "그리고 너희들은 그것이 어떤 기분인지 알거야. 너희 모두가 스탠리를 도와줄거라 믿는다."

 

Stanley looked at the ground.

스탠리는 땅바닥을 바라보았다.

 

Mr. Pendanski left the tent, and soon the other boys began to file out as well, taking their towels and change of clothes with them. Stanley was relieved to be left alone, but he was so thirsty he felt as if he would die if he didn't get something to drink soon.

펜단스키 씨는 텐트를 떠났고, 곧 다른 소년들도 수건과 옷 갈아입기를 들고  뒤따라 나가기 시작했다. 스탠리는 혼자 남겨져서 안심했지만, 목이 너무 말라 금방 마시지 못하면 죽을 것 같았다."

 

"Hey, uh, Theodore," he said, going after him. "Do you know where I can fill my canteen?"

"저기, 어, 테오도르," 그의 뒤를 따르며 말했다. "물통을 어디에서 채울수 있는 곳을 아니?

 

Theodore whirled and grabbed Stanley by his collar. "My name's not Thee-o-dore," he said. "It's Armpit." He threw Stanley to the ground.

태오도르는 갑자기 스탠리의 멱살을 잡았다. " 내이름은 태오도르가 아니야," "나는 겨드랑이야" 그는 스탠리는 바닥에 내팽겨 쳤다.

 

Stanley stared up at him,terrifled.

스탠리는 겁먹은 채 그를 쳐다봤다.

 

"There's a wather spigot on the wall of the shower stall."

"샤워실벽에 수도꼭지가 있어."

"Thanks.. Armpit," said Stanley.

"고마워.. 겨드랑이"

 

As he watched the boy turn and walk away, he couldn't for the life of him figure out why anyone would want to be called Armpit.

소년이 돌아서서 걸어가는 것을 보면서 왜 모든 사람에게 겨드랑이라고 불리우고 싶어하는지 알 수 없었다

 

In a way, it made him feel a little better about having to sleep in a cot that had been used by somebody named Barf Bag. Maybe it was a term of respect.

어떻게 보면, 구토봉지라는 이름을 가진 누군가가 사용했던 간이 침대에  자는 것이 조금 나아졌다. 아마도 그것은 일종의 존경의 표시일지도  모르니깐.
