Chapter#4

 

Stanley felt some what dazed as the guard unlocked his handcuffs and led him off the bus. He'd beeen on the bus for over eight hours.

스탠리는 경비원이 수갑을 풀고 그를 버스에서 내리라고 할 때 약간 얼떨떨한 느낌이었다.  그는 8시간 넘게 버스를 타고 있었다.

 

"Be careful," the bus driver siad as Stanley walked down the steps.
"'조심하렴." 운전사가 계단을 내려가는 스탠리에게 말했다.

 

Stanley wasn't sure if the bus driver meant fro him to be careful going down the steps, or if he was telling him to be careful at Camp Green Lake. "Thanks for the ride," he said. His mouth was dry and his throat hurt. He stepped onto the hard, dry dirt. There was a band of sweat around his wrist where the handcuff had been.

스탠리는 버스 운전사가 계단을 조심하라는 것인지지 캠프 그린 레이크에서 조심하라는 뜻인지 확신할 수없었다. "태워주 주셔서 감사합니다"라고 그가 말했다. 그의 입은 건조했고 목은 아팠다. 그는 단단하고 건조한 흙을 밟았다. 수갑이 채워진 손목 주위에는 땀이 나 있었다.

 

The land was barren and desolate. He could see a few rundown building and some tents. Farther away there was a cabin beneath two tall trees. Those two trees were the only plant life he could see. There weren't even weeds.

그 땅은 척박하고 황량했다. 그는 몇 개의 허름한 건물과 몇 개의 텐트를 볼 수 있었다. 더 멀리에는 두 개의 키 큰 나무 아래 오두막이 있었다. 그 두 개의 나무들이 그가 볼 수 있는 유일한 식물이었다.  잡초도 없었다.

 

The guard led Stanley to a small building. A sign on front said, YOU ARE ENTERING CAMP GREEN LAKE JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. Next to if was another sign which declard that it was a violation of the Texas Penal Code to bring guns, explosives, weapons, drungs, or alcohol onto the premises.

경비원이 스탠리를 작은 건물로 안내했다. 앞에 있는 표지판에는 '당신은 캠프 그린 레이크 소년 교정 시설에 들어가고 있습니다'라고 쓰여 있었다. 다음에는 총기, 폭발물, 무기, 마약 또는 알코올을  반입하는 것이 텍사스 형법을 위반이라는 또 다른 표지판이 있었다.

 

As Stanley read the sign he couldn't help but think, Well, duh!

스탠리는 간판을 읽으며 생각하지 않을 수 없었다. 음, 그렇군요!

 

The guard lead Stanley into the building, where he felt the welcome relief of air-conditioning.

경비원은 스탠리를 데리고 건물안으로 들어갔는데 그곳에서 에어콘이 있어 안도감을 느꼈다.

 

A man was sitting with his feet up on a desk. He turned his head when Stanley and the guard entered, but otherwise didn't move. Even though he was inside, he wore sunglasses and a cowboy hat. He also held a can of soda, and the sight of it made Stanley even more aware of his own thirst.

한 남자가 책상 위에 두 발을 올리고 앉아 있었다. 그는 스탠리와 그 경비원이 들어갈 때 고개를 돌렸지만, 몸은 움직이지 않았다. 그는 안에 있었음에도 선글라스를 끼고 카우보이 모자를 쓰고 있었다. 그는 또한 탄산음료 캔을 들고 있었고, 그것을 보자 스탠리는 그의 갈증을 더욱더 생겼다.

 

 He waited while the bus guard gave the man some papers to sign.

그는 경비원이 그 남자에게 서명할 서류를 주는 동안 기다렸다.

 

"That's a lot of sunflower seeds," the bus guard said.

"왜 이리 해바라기씨가 많아." 경비원이 말했다.

 

Stanley noticed a burlap sack filled with sunflower seeds on the floor next to the desk.

Stanley는 책상 옆 바닥에 해바라기씨가 들어있는 삼베자루를 발견했다.

 

"I quick smoking last month," said the man in the cowboy hat. He had a tattoo of a rattlesnake on his arm, and as he signed his name, the snake's rattle seemed to wiggle. "I used to smoke a pack a day. Now I eat a sack of these every week." 

"지난날에 담배를 끊었어,"  카우보이 모자를 쓴 남자가 말했다. 그의 팔에는 방울뱀 문신이었다. 그가 그의 이름을 사인하는 동안 방울뱀이 꿈틀 되는 것처럼 보였다.

 

The guard laughed. 경비원이 웃었다.

 

There must have been a small refrigerator behind his desk, because the man in the cowboy hat produced two more cans him, but the man gave one to the guard and said ths other was for the driver.

그의 책상뒤에는 작은 냉장고가 있는 것이 틀림없었다. 왜냐하면 카우보이 그 남자는 두개의 캔을 더 내놓았기 때문이다. 그러나 그 남자는 하나는 경비원에게 다른 것은 운전사 것이라고 말했다.

 

"Nine hours here, and now nine hours back," the guard grumbled. "What a day."

"여기까지 9시간, 되돌아가는데 9시간 시간," 경비원이 투덜거렸다.  "이런 날이라니."

 

Stanley thought about the long, miserable bus ride and felt a little sorry for the guard and the bus driver.

스탠리는 장거리와 고생스러운 버스를 탈것을 생각하니 경비원과 운전사에게 약간 안타까운 마음이 들었다.

 

The man in the cowboy had spit sunflower seed shells into a wastepaper basket. Then he walked around the desk to Stanley. "My name is Mr. Sir, " he said. "Whenever you speak to me you must call me by my name, it that clear?"

카우보이 남자는 해바라기씨껍질을 휴지통 안에 뱉었다. 그리고 나 탁자를 돌아 스탠리에게로 걸어갔다. "내 이름은 Mr. Sir 다," 라고 그가 말했다. "내가 말할 때마다 너는 내 이름을 불러야 한다, 알겠지?"

 

Stanley hesitated. "Uh, yes, Mr.Sir, " he said, though he couldn't imagine that was really the man's name.

스탠리 망설였다. "Uh, 네, Mr.Sir" 그가 말했다. 비록 그 남자의 이름이 진짜라고 생각되진 않았지만.

 

"You're not in the Girl Scounts anymore, " Mr. Sir said.

"너는 걸스카운트에 있는 것이 아니다."  Mr.Sir 가 말했다.

 

Stanley had to remove his clothes in front of Mr. Sir, who made sure he wasn't hiding anything. He was then given two sets of clothes and a towel. Each set coonsisted of a long-sleeve orange jumpsuit, an orange T-shirt, and yellow socks, Stanley wasn't sure if the socks had been yellow originally.

스탠리는 그가 아무것도 숨기지 않았다는 것을  확인시켜 주기 위해 그의  앞에서 옷을 벗어야 했다. 그러고 나서 그는 두 벌의 옷과 수건을 받았다. 각 세트는 긴소매의 오렌지색 점프슈트, 오렌지색 티셔츠, 그리고 노란색 양말로 구성되어 있었는데, 스탠리는 양말이 원래 노란색이었는지 확실하지 않았다.

 

He was also given white sneakers, an orange cap, and a canteen made of heavy plastic, which unfortunately was empty. The cap had a piece of cloth sewn on the back of it, for neck protection.

그는 또한 흰색 운동화, 오렌지색 모자, 그리고 무거운 플라스틱으로 만들어진 물통을 받았는데, 이것은 불행하게도텅 비어있었다. 모자는 목 보호를 위해 모자 뒷면에 천 조각을 꿰매져 있었다.

 

Stanley got dressed. The clothes smelled like soap.

스탠리는 옷을 입었다. 옷에서 비누 같은 냄새가 났다.

 

Mr. Sir told him he should wear one set to work in and one set for relaxtion. Laundry was done every three days. On that day his work clothes would be washed. Then the other set would become his work clothes, and he would get clean clothes to wear while resting.

Mr. Sir는 그에게 일을 할 때 한 세트를 입고,  한 세트는 휴식할 때 입어야 한다고 말했다. 빨래는 3일에 한 번씩 했다. 그날에 그의 작업복은 세탁한다. 그러면 다른 한 세트는 그의 작업복이 되고, 그는 휴식을 취할 때  깨끗한 옷을 입게 된다.

 

"You are to ding one hole each day, including Saturdays and Sundays. Each hole must be five feet deep, and five feet across in every direction. Your shovel is your measuring stick. Breakfast is served at 4:30."

"너는 토요일과 일요일을 포함하여 매일 한 개의 구멍을 파야 해.  각각의 구멍은 깊이가 5피트, 모든 방향으로 5피트 너비여야 한다. 너희 삽은 수치를 측정하는 막대기야. 아침 식사는 4시 30분에 줄 거야.

 

Stanley must have looked surprised, because Mr. Sir went on to explain that they started early to avoid the hottest part of the day. "No one is going to baby-sit-you," he added. "The longer it takes you to dig, the longer you will be out in the sun. If you dig up anything interesting, you are to report it to me or any other counselor. When you finish, the rest of the day is yours."

스탠리는 분명히 놀란 표정이었을 것이다, 왜냐하면 Mr. Sir는 하루 중 가장 더운 시간대를 피하기 위해 일찍 시작했다고 설명하기 때문이다. "아무도 너를 돌봐주지 않아, "라고 그가 덧붙였다. "땅을 파는데 더 오래 걸릴수록, 너는 더 오랫동안 햇빛을 쬐게 될 거야. 만약 네가 흥미로운 것을 캐낸다면, 나나 다른 상담사에게 그것을 보고해야 해. 너가 끝나면, 남은 하루는 너의 것이야."

 

Stanley nodded to show he understand.

스탠리는 이해했다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕였다.

 

"This isn't a Girl Scount camp," said Mr.Sir.

"여기는 걸스카우트 캠프가 아니야" Mr.Sir 말했다.

 

He checked Stanley's backpack and allowed him to keep it. Then he led Stanley outside into the blazing heat.

그는 스탠리의 가방을 확인한 후 그에게 가지고 있어도 된다는 허락을 받았다. 그리고는 스탠리를 뜨거울 열기가 있는 밖으로 스탠리를 데려갔다.

 

"Take a good look around you," Mr.Sir said. "What do you see?"

주변을 한번 봐바. Mr.Sir 말했다. 무엇이 보이지?

 

Stanley looked out across the vast wasteland. The air seemed thick with heat and dirt. "Not much," he said, then hastily added, "Mr.Sir."

스탠리는 광활한 황무지를 바라보았다. 공기는 열기와 먼지로 가득 찬 것 같았다. "볼 것이 없다" 그가 말했다. 그런 후 서둘려 덧붙였다. "Mr.Sir."

 

Mr.Sir laughed. "You see any guard towers?" Mr.Sir 가 웃었다. "감사탑이 보이니?"

 

"No." 아니요

 

"How about an electic fence?"  그럼 전기철조망은?

 

"No, Mr. Sir." 아니요. Mr.Sir.

 

"There's no fence at all, it there?" 전기철조망은 없지. 그렇지?

 

"No, Mr. Sir." 네. Mr.Sir.

 

"You want to run away?" Mr.Sir asked him. 너 도망가고 싶지? Mr. Sir가 스탠리에서 물었다.

 

Stanley looked back at him, unsure what he meant. 스탠리는 그가 무슨 의미인지 확신하지 못한 채 그를 돌아보았다.

 

"If you want to run away, go ahead, start running. I'm not going to stop you."

네가 만약 도망가고 싶다면 그리해, 달려봐, 나는 널 붙잡지 않을 거야.

 

Stanley didn't know what kind of game Mr.Sir was playing.

스탠리는 Mr.Sir가 무슨 게임을 하는지 알 수 없었다.

 

"I see you're looking at my gun. Don't worry. I'm not going to shoot you." He tapped his holster. "This is for yellowspotted lizard. I wouldn't waste a bullet on you."

"네가 내 총을 보고 있다는 것을 알아. 걱정하지 마. 당신을 쏘지 않을 거야." 그는 권총집을 두드렸다. "이것은 점박이 도마뱀용이야. 너에게 총알 하나도 낭비하지 않을 거거든."

 

"I'm not going to run away," Stanley said. "저는 도망가지 않을 거예요" 스탠리가 말했다.

 

"Good thinking," said Mr.Sir. "Nobody runs away from here. We don't need a fence. Know why? Because we've got the only water for a hundred miles. You want to run away? You'll be buzzard food in three days."

"좋은 생각이야," 라고 Mr.Sir가 말했다. "아무도 여기서 도망가지 않아. 우리는 울타리가 필요 없거든. 왜 그런지 알아? 왜냐하면 우리는 100마일 안에 있는 유일한 물을 가지고 있으니깐. 도망가고 싶어? 너는 3일 안에 독수리밥이 될 거야."

 

Stanley could see some kids dressed in orange and carrying shovels dragging themselves toward the tents.

스탠리는 오렌지옷을 입고 삽을 들고 텐트 쪽으로 걸어가는 몇몇 아이들을 불 수 있었다.

 

"You thirsty?" asked Mr.Sir. 목마르니? Mr.Sir 물어봤다.

 

"Yes. Mr. Sir." Stanley said gratefully. 네. Mr. Sir. 스탠리가 감사하다는 듯이 말했다.

 

"Well, you better get used to it. You're going to be thirsty for the next eighteen months."

음, 갈증에 익숙해지는 것이 좋을 거다. 앞으로 18개월 동안 목이 마를 테니 말이야.
