Chapter#6. 

 

Stanley took a shower-if you could call it that, ate dinner-if you could call it that, and went to bed-if you could call his smelly and scratchy cat a bed.

Stanley가 샤워를 했는데 그것을 샤워라고 할 수 있을까, 저녁을 먹었는데 그것을 저녁이라고 할 수 있을까, 그리고 잠자리에 들었는데 그것을 그의 냄새나고 가려운 것을  침대라고 할 수 있을까

 

Because of the scarcity of water, each camper was only allowed a four-minute shower. It took Stanley nearly that long to get used to the cold water. There was no knob for hot water. He kept stepping into, then jumping back from, the spray, until the wather shut off automatically. He never managed to use his bar of soap, which was just as well, because he wouldn't have had time to rinse off the suds.

물이 부족하기 때문에, 각각의 캠핑카에는 4분간의 샤워만 허용되었다. Stanley가 차가운 물에 익숙해지는데 거의 그 정도의 시간이 걸렸다.  뜨거운 물을 위한 수도꼭지가 없었다. 그는 물이 자동으로 꺼질 때까지 계속해서 물줄기 속으로 들어갔나오기를 반복했다.  비누 커품을 헹구어 낼 시간이 없어서 비누를 사용할 수 없었다.

 

Dinner was some kind of stewed meat and vegetables. The meat was brown and the vegetables had once been green. Everything tasted pretty much the same. He ate it all, and used his sliced of white bread to mop up the juice. Stanley had never been one to leave food on his plate,no matter how it tasted.

저녁은 어떤 종류의 고기와 채소 스튜였다.  고기는 갈색이었고 채소는 한때 녹색이었다. 모든 것이 거의 같은 맛이었다. 그는 모든 것을 다 먹었고, 흰 빵 조각을 사용해서 국물을 닦아냈다.. 스탠리는 음식이 어떻게 맛이 나든 간에, 그의 접시에 음식을 남긴 적이 없었다. 그것이 어떤맛이라도.

 

"What'd you do?" one of the campers asked him."

"너 뭘했니?" 캠퍼중 한명이 그에게 물었다.

 

At first Stanley didn't know what he meant.

처음에 스탠리는 그게 무슨 의미 인지 알지 못했다.

 

"They sent you here for a reason."

"그들이 이유가 있어서 너를 여기로 보내겠지."

 

"Oh," he realied. " I stole a pair fo sneakers."

"아." 스탠리가 깨달았다. "내가 운동화 한 컬레를 훔쳤어."

 

The other boys thought that was funny. Stanley wasn't sure why. Maybe because their crimes were a lot worse than stealing shoes.

다른 소년들은 그것이 재미있다고 생각했다. 스탠리는 그 이유를 확신하지 못했다. 아마도 그들의 범죄가 신발을 훔치는 것보다 훨씬 더 나빴기 때문일 것이다.

 

"From a store, or were they on someone's feet?" asked Squid.

"가게에서, 아니면 누군가의 발에서?" 오징어가 물었다.

 

"Uh, neither," Stanley answered. "They belonged to Clyde Livingston." 

"음, 둘다 아니야." 스탠리가 대답했다. "그것들은 클라이드 리빙스톤 것이였어."

 

Nobody believed him. 

아무도 그 말을 믿지 않았다.

 

"Sweet feet?" said X-Ray. "Yeah, right!"

"달콤한 발?" 엑스레이가 말했다. "그래, 맞아!"

 

"No way," said Squid.

"말도 안돼." 오징어가 말했다.

Now, as Stanley lay on his cot, he thought it was kind of funny in a way. Nobody had believed him when he said he was innocent. Now, when he said he stole them, nobody believed him either.

스탠리가 침대에 누워있을 때, 그는 어떤 의미에서는 웃기다고 생각했다. 그가 자신이 무죄라고 말할 때 아무도 그를 믿지 않았다. 이제 그가 그것을 훔쳤다고 말할 때도 아무도 그를 믿지 않는다는 것이 웃긴 것 같았다.

 

Ciyde "Sweet Feet" Livingston was a famous baseball player. He'd led the American League  in stolen bases over the last three years.He was also the only player in history to ever hit four triples in one game.

클라이드 "달콤한 발" 리빙스턴은 유명한 야구 선수였다. 그는 지난 3년간 도루로 아메리칸 리그를 이끌었다.  그는 또한 역사상 한 경기에서 4개의 3루타를 친 유일한 선수였다.

 

Stanley had a poster of him hanging on the wall of his bedroom. He used to have the poster anyway. He didn't know where it was now. It has been taken by the police and was used as evidence of his guilt in the courtroom.

스탠리는 침실 벽에 그의 포스터를 걸어두었다. 아무튼 예전에는 포스터가 있었다. 그가 지금 어디에 있는지 모르겠다. 경찰은 그것을 가져갔고 법정에서 그의 유죄의 증거로 사용되었다.

 

Clyde Livingstone also came to the court. In spite of everything, when Stanley found out that Sweet Feet was going to be there, he was actually excited about the prospect of meeting his hero.

클라이드 리빙스턴도 법정에 나타났다. 모든 일에도 불구하고, 스탠리가 '달콤한 발'가  올 것을 알게 되었을 때, 사실 그는 자신의 영웅을 만나는 것에 대한 기대감에 부풀었다.

 

Clyde Livingstone testified that they were his sneakers and that he had donated them to help raise money for the homeless shelter. He said he couldn't image what kind of horrible person would steal from homeless children.

클라이드 리빙스톤은 그것들이 그의 운동화고 그가 노숙자 보호소를 위한 모금을 돕기 위해 그것들을 기부했다고 증언했다.  그는 노숙자 아이들로부터 어떤 끔찍한 사람이 훔칠수 있는지 상상할 수 없다고 말했습니다.

 

That was the worst part for Stanley. His hero though he was a no-good-dirty-rotten thief.

그건 스탠리에게 최악의 부분이었다. 그의 영웅은 그를 못되고 더러운 도둑이라고 생각했다. 

 

As Stanley tried to turn over on this cot, he was afrid it was going to collapse under all his weight. He barely fit in it.

When he finally managed to roll over on his stomach, the smell was so bad that he had to turn over again and try sleeping on his back. The cot smelled like sour milk.

Though it was night, the air was still very warm. Arpmit was snoring two cots away.

스탠리는 이 간이 침대를 돌아 누울려고 할때 그의 몸무게로  무너질까바 두려웠다. 그는 그 침대에 거의  맞지 않았다.그가 마침내 엎드려 몸을 굴릴 수 있었을 때, 그 냄새는 너무 심해서 그는 다시 한번 몸을 뒤집고 엎드려 자야만 했다. 간이 침대에서는 시큼한 우유 냄새가 났다.
비록 밤이었지만, 공기는 여전히 매우 따뜻했다. 겨드랑이는 두 침대가 떨어진 곳에서 코를 골고 있었다.

 

Back at school, a bully named Derrick Dunne used to torment Stanely. The teachers never took Stanleys's complaints serioursly, becuse Derrick was so much smaller than Stanley. Some teachers even seemed to find it amusing that a little kid like Derric could pick on someone as big as Stanley.

학교에서, 데릭 던(Derrick Dunne)이라는 불량배가 스탠리를 괴롭히곤 했다. 선생님들은 스탠리의 불평을 심각하게 받아들이지 않았는데, 그 이유는 데릭이 스탠리보다 훨씬 작았기 때문이다. 어떤 선생님들은 데릭처럼 작은 아이가 스탠리만큼 큰 사람을 괴롭힐 수 있다는 사실이 재미있다고 생각하는 것 같았다.

 

On the day Stanley was arrested, Derrick had taken Stanley's notebook and, after a long game of come-and-get-it, finally dropped it in the toilet in the boys' restroom. By the time Stanley retrived it, he had missed his bus and had to walk home.

스탠리가 체포된 날 데릭은 스탠리의 공책을 가져갔고, 긴 오락가락 끝에 마침내 그것을 남자 화장실에 떨어뜨렸다. 스탠리가 그것을 회수할때 쯤 그는 버스를 놓쳐서 집으로 걸어가야 했다.

 

It was while he was walking home, carrying his wet notebook, whith the prospect of having to copy the ruined pages, that the sneakers fell from the sky.

그가 물에 젖은 수첩을 들고 집으로 걸어가고 있을 때, 엉망이 된 페이지들을 복구해야 한다고 생각할때 운동화가 하늘에서 떨어졌다.

 

"I was walking home and the sneakers fell from the sky," he had told the judge. "One hit me on the head."

그는 판사에게 "집으로 걸어가고 있는데 운동화가 하늘에서 떨어졌다"며 "하나는 내 머리를 때렸다"고 말했다

 

It had hurt, too.

아프기도 했다.

 

They hadn't exactly fallen from the sky. He had just walked out from under a freeway overpass when the shoes hit him on the head.

그 신발은 정확히 하늘에서 떨어진 것이 아니었더. 스탠리가 고속도로 육교아래에서 막 걸어나오다가 신발이 근의 머리를 때렸다.

 

Stanley took it as some kind of sign. His father had been trying to figure out a way to recycle old sneakers, and suddenly a pair of sneakers fell on top of him, seemingly out of nowhere, like a gift from God.

스탠리는 그것을 일종의 계시로 받아들였다. 스탠리의 아버지는 오래된 운동화를 재활용 할 수 있는 방법을 찾으려고 애썼고, 갑자기 신의 선물처럼, 난데없이, 한 켤레의 운동화가 그의 위에 떨어졌다.

 

Naturally, he had no way of knowing they belonged to Clyde Livingston. In fact, the shoes were anything but sweet. Whoever had worn them had had a bad case of foot odor.

당연히, 그는 신발이 클라이드 리빙스턴의 것이라는 것을 알 방법이 없었다. 사실, 이 신발은 전혀 달콤하지 않았다. 이 신발을 신은 사람은 발냄새가 심했던 것같았다.

 

Stanley couldn't help but think that there was something special about the shoes, that they would somehow provide the key to his father's invention. It was too much of a concidence to be a mere accident. Stanley had felt like he was holding destiny's shoes.

스탠리는 그 신발에 뭔가 특별한 것이 있고, 그것들이 어떻게든 아버지의 발명품의 열쇠를 제공할 것이라고 생각하지 않을 수 없었다. 단순한 사고라고 하기에는  너무나 우연의 일치였다. 스탠리는 운명의 신발을 들고 있는 것처럼 느껴졌다.

 

 He ran. Thinking back now, he wasn't sure why he ran. Maybe he was in a hurry to bring the shoes to his father, or maybe he was trying to run away from his miserable and  humiliating day at school.

그는 달렸다. 지금 생각하면, 그는 자신이 왜 달렸는지 확신할 수 없었다. 아마도 그는 신발을 아버지에게 가져다 주려고 서두른 것이거나, 학교에서 비참하고 굴욕적인 하루를 달아나려 한 것일수도 있었다.

 

A patrol car pulled alongside him. A pliceman asked him why was running. Then he took the shoes and made a call on his radio. Shortly thereafter, Stanley was arrested.

순찰차 한 대가 그의 옆에 왔다. 한 경찰관이 그에게 왜 달렸냐고 물었다. 그런 후  그는 신발을 가져가더니 무전을 쳤다.얼마 지나지 않아, Stanley는 체포되었다.

 

It turned out the sneakers had been stolen from a display a the homeless shelter. That evening rich people were going to come to the shelter and pay a hundred dollars to eat the food that the poor people ate every day for free. Clyde Livingston, who had once lived at the shelter when he was younger, was going to speak and sign autographs. His shoes woiuld be auctioned, and it was expected that they would sell for over five thouand dollars. All the money would go to help the homeless.

알고 보니 이 운동화는 노숙자 보호소의 진열대에서 도난당한 것이었다. 그날 저녁 부유한 사람들이 보호소로 와서 100달러를 지불하고 가난한 사람들에게 매일 먹는 음식을 무료로 제공하였다. 어렸을 때 보호소에서 살았던 클라이드 리빙스턴은 연설을 하고 사인을 해주기로 했다. 그의 신발은 경매에 올라갔고, 그것들은 5천 달러가 넘는 가격에 팔릴 것으로 예상되었다. 모든 돈은 노숙자들을 돕기 위해 기부 될 것이다.

 

Because of the baseball schedule, Stanley's trial was delayed several months. His parents couldn't affored a laywer. "You don't need a laywer," his mother hd said. "Just tell the truth."

스탠리의 재판이 야구 일정 때문에 몇 달이나 지연되었다. 그의 부모는 변호사를 감당할 여력이 없었다. "변호사는 필요 없어," 그의 어머니가 말했다. "진실만 말해."

 

Stanley told the truth, but perhaps it would have been better if he had lied a little. He could have said he found the shoes in the street. No one believed they fell from the sky.

스탠리는 진실을 말했지만,  아마 그가 조금만 거짓말을 한 게 더 나았을지도 모른다. 그는 그 신발들을 길에서 발견했다고 말할 수도 있었다. 아무도 그것들이 하늘에서 떨어진 거라고 믿지 않았다.

 

It wasn't destiny, he realized. It was his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!

그건 운명이 아니라고 깨달았다. 문제는 그의 불친절하고 더럽고 썩은 돼지를 훔치는 증조할아버지였다.

 

The judge called Stanley's crime despicable. "The shoes were valuded at over five thousand dallars. It was money that would provide food and shelter for the homeless. And you stole that from them, just so youn could have a souvenir."

판사는 스탠리의 범죄를 비열하다고 평했다. "구두는 오만 달러가 넘는 가치가 있었습니다. 그것은 노숙자들에게 음식과 주거지를 제공할 돈이었습니다. 그리고  당신은 그것을 기념품을 갖기 위해서  그것을 훔쳤지요."

 

The judge said that there was an opening at Camp Green Lake, and he suggested tat the discipline of the camp might improve Stanley's charactar. It was either that or jail. Stanley's parents asked if they could have some time to find out more about Camp Green Lake, but the judge advised them to make a quick decision. "Vacancies don't last long at Camp Green Lake."

판사는 "캠프 그린 레이크에 자리가 있고, 그 캠프의 훈육이 스탠리의 성품을 개선할 수도 있다"고 말했다. 그는 그렇지 않으면 감옥이라는 선택이 남아 있을 것이라고 했다. 스탠리의 부모는 캠프 그린 레이크에 대해 더 알아보기 위한 시간을 갖을 수 있느냐고 물었지만, 판사는 빠른 결정을 내리라고 조언했다. "캠프 그린 레이크의 자리는 오래 가지 않습니다."
